About

Ahoi Ashtami falls on Kartika Krishna Ashtami, four days after Karwa Chauth and about eight days before Diwali. It is kept mostly in North Indian homes, in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan. Ahoi Mata is worshipped as a form of Parvati. Families draw her on the wall, traditionally in geru (red ochre), with a syahu (porcupine) and her cubs beside her.

The katha tells of a mother who, while digging soil for her home, accidentally killed a porcupine's cub. Her own sons were lost one by one, and she won them back by fasting and praying to Ahoi Mata with a sincere heart. Mothers once kept the fast for their sons; today many keep it for all their children.

The fast is broken at dusk, when the first stars are out, with arghya to the stars. Some families wait for the moon instead, but it rises late on Ashtami (11:40 PM in New Delhi in 2026). In the US and Canada, clocks go back an hour on the same morning, 1 November, so the evening comes earlier than you may expect.

Questions

When is Ahoi Ashtami 2026 in the USA and UK?

Sunday, November 1, 2026, the same day as India. Star-sighting time is 5:22 PM in New Jersey, 5:36 PM in San Jose, 5:38 PM in Toronto and 5:09 PM in London. In Sydney it is 7:49 PM.

What time will the stars come out in New Jersey on Ahoi Ashtami?

About 5:22 PM in Edison. That is the end of evening twilight, and the US Naval Observatory gives 5:23 PM for the same moment. Clocks go back an hour at 2 AM that morning, so it will feel early.

Do we break the fast on the stars or the moon?

Most families break it on the stars at dusk. Some wait for the moon, which rises late on Ashtami: 11:21 PM in New Jersey, 10:35 PM in London and 11:40 PM in New Delhi. In San Jose the Ashtami ends at 11:40 PM, a few minutes before the moon comes up, so families there who usually wait for the moon may want to ask an elder or their temple.

What if it's cloudy and we can't see any stars?

Many mothers offer arghya facing the sky at the star-sighting time for their city and break the fast then. Others wait for a gap in the clouds. Go by what your family does.

Is Ahoi Ashtami only for mothers of sons?

The old custom was for sons. Today many mothers keep it for all their children, daughters included.

We don't have a karwa left from Karwa Chauth. What can we use?

A small steel or brass lota filled with water, tied with red thread. It does the same job in the puja.
