About

Saraswati puja is done in the forenoon (purvahna), while Panchami tithi is still running. Students keep their books, pens and instruments before the Goddess, and many families choose this day for a small child's first letters (Vidyarambh, called Aksharabhyasam in Telugu homes). Yellow is the colour of the day: mustard fields are in flower, people wear yellow, and kesari rice or yellow sweets go to the Goddess as bhog.

In Bengal and eastern India the day is Saraswati Puja, kept with great excitement in schools and colleges. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana it is Sri Panchami, and the Gnana Saraswati temple at Basar is full of families bringing children for aksharabhyasam.

2Place Saraswati's image (a printed picture is fine) with books, pens and instruments before her.
3In the forenoon, while Panchami lasts, offer yellow flowers, akshat, sandal and kesari rice or a yellow sweet.
4Recite the Saraswati Vandana (“Ya Kundendu…”) and pray for learning.
5If a child is starting school, begin their first letters today. Otherwise read or practise music for a while yourself.

Saraswati Vandana (Ya Kundendu)Saraswati Vandana is the traditional Sanskrit prayer to Goddess Saraswati that begins 'Ya Kundendu Tushara Hara Dhavala'. It pictures her white as jasmine, the moon and snow, holding the veena and seated on a white lotus, and asks her to remove all dullness of mind. Students recite it before study and exams, it is sung in school assemblies in many parts of India, and it is said on Vasant (Basant) Panchami.

Why is yellow worn on Basant Panchami?

Yellow is the colour of mustard fields in bloom at the start of spring. In North Indian homes it is also seen as Saraswati's colour, so people wear yellow and cook kesari rice or yellow sweets for bhog.

Is it a good day to start a child's education?

Yes. Many families do Vidyarambh (Aksharabhyasam in Telugu homes) today. A parent or priest guides the child's finger to write the first letters, often on a plate of rice.

Can we do the puja on the weekend instead?

The tithi day is the day, so do a short home puja on Thursday morning if you can, even before school or work. Many temples abroad hold a community Saraswati puja on the nearest weekend. Going to that as well is perfectly fine.
