How to observe

1. 1Take a sankalp in the morning and keep the Ekadashi fast (no grains).
2. 2Draw the Lord's feet in rangoli and set up a sugarcane mandap near the Tulsi. If you can't get sugarcane, decorate the Tulsi with flowers instead. If your plant is indoors for winter, do the puja where it is.
3. 3In the evening, worship Vishnu with tulsi leaves, seasonal produce (sugarcane, water chestnut, sweet potato) and diyas.
4. 4Wake the Lord with bells, conch and "Uttishtha Govinda", then sing the aarti.
5. 5Do Tulsi Vivah if your family does.
6. 6Break the fast on Dwadashi within the parana time.

• Om Jai Jagdish HareOm Jai Jagdish Hare is one of the best-known Hindu aartis, a Hindi hymn to Lord Vishnu as Jagdish, "Lord of the universe", written by Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri of Punjab around 1870. It has a refrain and seven stanzas asking Vishnu to remove sorrow, forgive our faults and increase our faith. Many families close their puja or Satyanarayan katha with it, in India and across the diaspora.
