About
Ugadi (yuga + adi, “the start of an age”) begins the new lunar year for Telugu and Kannada families and gives the year its name in the sixty-year cycle. The year that begins on Ugadi 2027 is Plavanga.
The first thing eaten that morning is Ugadi pachadi: neem flowers, jaggery, raw mango, tamarind, salt and a little chilli or pepper. Its six tastes stand for the mix of good and bad the year will bring, and elders say to take them all in the same spirit. Kannada homes also share bevu-bella, neem with jaggery. Later in the day comes Panchanga Shravanam, when a priest reads out the new panchangam: the rains, the harvest, and the income and expense (aadaya-vyayam) for each rashi.
The same day is Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and the first day of Chaitra Navratri in the North.

Questions
When is Ugadi 2027 in India?
Wednesday, April 7, 2027 (New Delhi panchang). The new year that begins that day is called Plavanga.
What is the Ugadi 2027 date in the USA?
Wednesday, April 7, 2027, the same as India, in both New Jersey and California. Since it is a weekday, many Telugu and Kannada associations and temples hold their Ugadi celebration and Panchanga Shravanam on the nearest weekend. Eat the pachadi at home on the day itself.
Ugadi 2027 date in the UK, Canada and Australia?
London and Toronto: Wednesday, April 7, 2027. Sydney: Thursday, April 8, 2027, a day later, because Pratipada is taken at local sunrise there.
Why does Ugadi pachadi have six tastes?
Sweet jaggery, bitter neem flower, sour tamarind, astringent raw mango, salt and chilli. Together they stand for the mix of joy and sorrow a year brings, and the idea is to accept all of it with an even mind.
What is Panchanga Shravanam?
The reading of the new year's panchangam, usually by the temple priest. People listen for the year's rains and harvest and for their own rashi's income and expense. Hearing it on Ugadi is itself considered auspicious.
Is Ugadi the same day as Gudi Padwa?
Yes. Both are the lunar new year on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada: Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and Goa.
We can't find neem flowers abroad. What can we use?
Indian grocery stores usually sell dried neem flowers before Ugadi, and a pinch is enough. If you have none, make the pachadi with what you have. The point is to taste every flavour of the year.
