Ganesha is believed to have been born at midday, so the prana-pratishtha and the sixteen-step (shodashopachara) puja are done in the Madhyahna muhurat. Families bring home a clay murti, offer 21 blades of durva grass and modaks, and immerse the murti after one and a half, three, five, seven or ten days. Tradition says not to look at the moon on Chaturthi night.
In Maharashtra the festival fills the streets with public pandals. Telugu homes do the patri puja with 21 kinds of leaves and hang a palavelli of fruits above the murti. Tamil homes bring a small clay Pillaiyar with a paper umbrella and offer kozhukattai.

We live outside India. Is the date the same for us?
We list the India date only. Abroad the day can differ by one, because Chaturthi is worked out for local time. Check with your local temple.
Why should we not see the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi?
A Purana story says the moon laughed at Ganesha and was cursed, so seeing it on this night is said to bring false blame (mithya dosha). If you see it by chance, tradition says to hear the Syamantaka jewel story.
How many days should we keep the murti?
Go by your family's custom. One and a half days is common, and others keep it three, five, seven or ten days.
How do we do visarjan outside India?
Many families immerse the clay murti in a bucket or tub of water at home. Once the clay dissolves, they pour the water into the garden or a potted plant. Some temples also arrange a visarjan. Check local rules before using a lake or beach. A metal or stone murti is not immersed: do the uttara puja and put it back in the shrine.
