Questions

When is the Jai Ganesh Deva aarti sung?

At the start of almost any puja, because Ganesh is worshipped first. Many homes also sing it every morning and evening. It is sung most on Wednesdays, on Sankashti Chaturthi and on each of the ten days of Ganesh Chaturthi, right up to visarjan.

Why is Ganesh's aarti sung first?

Because Ganesh is worshipped first in every puja. Tradition calls him Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles, so families begin with him before any other deity.

Who wrote Jai Ganesh Deva?

Nobody knows for sure. It is a traditional aarti. One stanza says "Sur Shyam sharan aaye" (Sur, devotee of Shyam, has come for refuge), so many people credit the poet Surdas. There is no firm evidence for this, so we call it a traditional aarti with the signature "Sur Shyam".

Is Jai Ganesh Deva the same as Sukhakarta Dukhaharta?

No. "Jai Ganesh Deva" is a Hindi aarti sung across North India and the diaspora. "Sukhakarta Dukhaharta" is a Marathi aarti by Sant Samarth Ramdas, and it is the favourite in Maharashtra, especially during Ganeshotsav. Many families sing both, one after the other.

How long does the aarti take?

About four minutes, singing the refrain after each stanza.

Source and review

Source: Traditional Hindi aarti as given by drikpanchang.com "Shri Ganesh Ji Ki Aarti", cross-checked with prabhatkhabar.com (Anuradha Paudwal version) and bhaktilok.in

Stanza order and wording follow the widely sung Anuradha Paudwal recording as transcribed by prabhatkhabar.com; drikpanchang lists the same stanzas and gives "माथे पर तिलक सोहे", "हार चढ़े", "अँधे को" and "शम्भु सुतवारी … जग बलिहारी" as alternatives (see stanza notes). bhaktilok.in omits the "Sur Shyam" stanza. Quotation marks around "सूर" in some prints are omitted here.
